Right On

Dec. 11, 2006

Gee, I was away from the blog for awhile and all heck broke loose in my absence (re: "I'm Sorry'' post)!
But it does my heart good to see that such passion is incited on a blog about movies. Responders really ran with the topic _ on to education, patriotism, Ed Sullivan, et al. Surely somebody is gonna do a movie about bloggers and the art of duking it out in cyberspace.
Today, we are moving past celebrity public drunkenness and mea culpas to the horror of Sacha Baron Cohen being named, by the L.A. Film Critics, co-best actor of the year for "Borat.'' He shares the award with the legitimate choice of Forest Whitaker for "The Last King of Scotland.'' Hmm, do I smell a cop-out by naming two winners?
At best, Cohen's Borat was a dopey curiosity. At worst, he was a bully taking advantage of naifs. Really, there was no shortage of great film acting this year (Clive Owen, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, everybody in "Little Miss Sunshine,'' Penelope Cruz, et al.), so let's get real.

SBC did gave an excellant comedic performance while dealing with challenges none of the other people you mentioned had to deal with. Improvisation, all single take scenes, police, potential violence, continual performance all day, etc. He didn't have the support of other performers or the comforts of a film set. More conventional isn't synonymous with better.

And I don't understand why he is viewed as a elite picking on bumpkins. He's a Jewish British Cambridge graduate - which part of that is supposed to make him part of an elite conspiracy? Why are these people supposed to be bumpkins? Because some of them are from the South even though they are university students who look not at all starving or elegant people with lovely expensive homes? One of the students has complained to the courts that he's lost a prestigious internship at a law firm. That kid doesn't know how to read a waiver? Surely the New Yorkers in suits telling Borat to f off aren't "naifs".

I haven't seen Borat, but I've seen Leonardo di Caprio in quite a few movies, right from "Gilbert Grape," and he is a truly talented actor. Even without seeing his latest film, I feel safe saying di Caprio deserves top ranking in any best actor list.
