Is Great so Great?

June 24, 2006

The second feature film about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States is out _ ""The Great New Wonderful.'' It weaves five stories together of various people affected by the destruction of the World Trade Center. It's getting good and bad reviews. Do you think it's unfair to make movies about the attack? Are filmmakers exploiting a tragedy to make money? Are you planning to see Oliver Stone's upcoming movie, ""World Trade Center?'' Or, have you had enough? I'm of two minds about the issue: worried that movies will misrepresent the horror of the day, yet convinced we need to remember so we can understand why the attack happened.

technically the GNW is not "about the attack" as it is about a year after 9.11 and how 5 people in nyc were affected... the attack on the WTC and pentagon were never directly mentioned in the film.

Oliver Stone or not, I think 9/11 flicks are creepy.

I don't think I'd feel that way if I didn't think our government was lying to us about really happened -- and why -- and who's really responsible (evidently not bin Laden, because Bush called the dogs off him in Nov. '01).

It just feels like we can't bury our dead and grieve because of that, so it seems wrong to "entertain" on the graves that still haven't been consecrated.
