Borat Rules

Dec. 12, 2006

Regarding "Right On:'' Anonymous is tuned into the zeitgeist: A pal who votes with the New York Film Critics Circle, which yesterday named Forest Whitaker best actor for "The Last King of Scotland,'' says Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Borat, also did well in that group's voting. Another industry insider, who runs a prestigious art house, says this year's oddball choices are because "They like to be different.'' Here's a scary thought: Baron Cohen is nominated for an Oscar, wins, and takes the stage in his "Borat' underwear. Could happen.

First of all, "Napoleon Dynamite" has nothing on "Borat." And, while we're on the subject of Sacha Baron Cohen's uproarious satire, tally up two more for the comedy, as it nabbed two Golden Globe nominations, one for Cohen as actor in a comedy and the other for the film in the comedy/musical category. The thought of Cohen getting an Oscar nomination for his role as Borat is no more insane than Johnny Depp's nomination for his inspired role as the daffy pirate in Jerry Bruckheimer's mindless headache-inducing amusement park ride.
