Pirated

July 26, 2006

Why do moviegoers make the ""Pirates of Caribbean'' films such huge moneymakers? The sequel has grossed nearly $330 million in about three weeks. Despite being chaotic in narrative, unnecessarily bombastic and repetitive, both movies are big hits, and they both run more than two hours. That's punishment, not moviegoing! Anyone care to offer a theory about why ""Pirates'' are so popular?

They're fun. I love a strong, character study or film noir as much as the next film snob, but "Pirates" is an entertaining action/comedy series -- something people want to pay to see at theaters (while they talk to their friends). It's also an original series and not a remake of a 70s or 80s television show or a 50s or 60s horror.
