Meltdown Mel

Aug. 2, 2006

Mel Gibson is at it again: Last Friday, he was arrested under suspicion of drunken driving on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. Police records say he made sexist (to a woman police officer) and anti-Semitic (to a Jewish arresting officer) remarks. He has apologized and said he isn't anti-Semitic (no word if he's apologizing for sexist comments!) Two years ago, I was castigated for saying Gibson's movie, ""The Passion of the Christ'' was anti-Semitic. Some say Gibson's verbal abusiveness was the tequila talking; I'm of the persuasion that at best, he's ""in conflict'' over women and Judaism. What do you think? Do you think the incident will hurt his career?

I think his career is pretty much over with this, at least for some time to come, because he exposed himself as a hypocrite. I hope he gets help with his alcoholism, though, and equally with his hate issues.

His uber-Christianism can't be anything but phony as long as he hates any of God's creation. Maybe some family therapy would help. It should never be too late for that.

Gibson's dad is said to be a Holocaust denier, and many have pointed out for years the apple rarely falls far from the tree.

Hmm. I'm not so quick to agree it should hurt his career.

At least Mel apologized, and asked for help and conversations to battle both his personal demons.

And at least he keeps his bigotry to himself when he's not in a drunken near-stuper.

The real wonder to me is why so many people accept the bigotry of Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Pat Robertson and the multitude of non-news pundits on Sunday morning TV and 24/7 cable "news" (cough).

I'm thinking at least some of the people crucifying Mel now have no problem with these uncloseted hatemongers.

Their apologists tout superior "moral values" (cough) while buying caging lists targeting mostly black voters and hold back ballot machine from polling sites in black neighborhoods to prevent black constituencies from voting. And let's not forget the continuing, despicable handling of New Orleans before and after the levees broke post-Katrina ... time for redevelopment for rich-white-folk of the megachurch var-i-e-ty.

They may like the attention on Mel so fewer people notice where the UNapologetic bigots are.

Mel Gibson is a very fine actor and a very fine businessman. Unfortunately, this bias event will probably not hurt his career. So that justice would be served, he should be crucified under the HOLLYWOOD sign in Los Angeles.

Don't think it will hurt his career. America loves whackos, especially the 'celebrity' kinds.
After all 'weird' and 'controversial' is the key to becoming famous in la-la land.

Fellow anonymous, Shirley McClain comes to mind with what you wrote. LOL

I don't know, though. Do you think her wacky stuff held her back from better roles? She's such an excellent actress.

I didn't read the anti-women stuff. Can anyone be more specific?

It's interesting that there isn't the same level of outrage between gender and religious bigotry, isn't it?

What's the reference to Mel and NJ judge Napolitano about? I thought the arrest was in LA.
